Authorities say a 15-year-old girl died on Thursday after failing to yield to a semi-truck in southwest Kansas.
The Kansas Highway Patrol says the crash happened just before 4 p.m. on Thursday when a 1993 Chevrolet 1500 was stopped at a stop sign on County Road 17 at the Junction.
The driver of the truck, 15-year-old Emilee Hamilton of Liberal, Kansas, failed to yield and turned westbound onto U-54, pulling out in front of a Kenworth semi-trailer.
The KHP says Hamilton was pronounced de*ad at the scene. The driver of the semi-truck, a 60-year-old Wichita man, was not injured in the crash.
A GoFundMe has been established to help Emilee’s family.
The Liberal Police Department says Hamilton joined the department as a Cadet in the fall of 2023 and has been actively involved ever since.
“She was always first to volunteer for something, even if it scared her,” the department said.
LPD said Emilee left “an everlasting impact” on the department, staff and her fellow Cadets.
