An Indiana mother, 32 years old, was arrested this week after she allegedly tried to ki*ll her own son. She hit the 10-year-old boy in the head with a hammer almost ki*lling him and then tried to k*ill herself. Court records show that Bethany Joy Fleming was arrested on Thursday and charged with one count of attempted intentional mur*der.
A press release from the City of Fort Wayne Police Department on Thursday said that at 5:36 p.m. on October 3, officers responded to an emergency call about a “Unknown Problem” at the Tyler Terrace Apartments complex in the 1200 block of Ralph Avenue, which is about 120 miles northeast of Indianapolis.
First responders said they found an adult woman, later identified as Fleming, and a male child at the address. Both were said to have “life-threatening injuries.” The homicide unit of the police department was sent to the scene and took over the investigation.
Police didn’t give out many details. They only said that the adult woman was taken to the hospital for medical care and then arrested on one count of attempted mu*rder after she was released.
But a copy of the probable cause affidavit showed scary new information about how Fleming was arrested.
According to the document, Fleming was the one who called 911 first and told the operator that she thought someone was going to come to her house to take her and her son and sell them to a se*x organisation.
“So I tried to ki*ll him, I think I k*illed him, and I st*abbed myself,” she allegedly said while on the line with 911. “Please my name is Bethany.”
After calling the police, Fleming was found inside her flat when they got there. She was said to be bleeding from what looked like a neck st*ab wound. It is said that the hurt mother said again that she thought she and her son were going to be sold into se*x sla*very.
When police asked Fleming if she had done anything to harm herself or her 10-year-old boy, she allegedly responded that she had struck the child in the head with a hammer, explaining that “she thought this was the only way.”
The mother and her son were both taken to a nearby hospital, where the child was said to have a brain bleed and a fractured skull. After being admitted, he was rushed right into emergency surgery. As of Thursday afternoon, doctors were not sure if the boy would survive his injuries, and the boy was said to be in critical condition.
Fleming is being held in the Allen County Jail right now without bond.
