Background
Ahlea Monet Freeman grew up in Newark, New Jersey and attended West Orange High School. She obtained her undergraduate and Master’s degrees from from Felician University in Rutherford, New Jersey.
In 2020, Freeman moved to Wilmington, Delaware, even though she didn’t know anyone in the area. She was looking for “a change of scenery,” according to her family.
Disappearance
On September 14, 2023, Ahlea Freeman had her last contact with her sister through text messages. Her sister suggested she could come visit with her daughter but Freeman declined, claiming the inconvenience of parking on her street that day as a parade was being held.
On September 24, 2023, Freeman last contacted her mother via a text message.
On October 1, 2023, Ahlea was last seen in the 100 block of West 10th Street, near her apartment complex in Wilmington, Delaware. It is unknown what she was doing at this time.
Ahlea hasn’t been seen or heard from since. She missed her niece’s birthday two days prior which is out of character for her, according to family.
On November 20, 2023, Freeman’s apartment complex contacted her sister, who was listed as emergency contact, when she failed to pay rent.
Her sister immediately drove to Delaware from New Jersey, and met with police the next morning to conduct a wellness check at Ahlea’s apartment.
Ahlea was reported missing to the Wilmington Police Department by her sister when she was nowhere to be found during the wellness check.
Investigation
Ahlea’s ID and debit card, among other personal belongings, were found left behind on the floor of her apartment.
On November 22, 2023, a Gold Alert was issued by the Wilmington Police for Ahlea Freeman. Gold Alert’s are issued when law enforcement receives notice that a senior citizen, suicidal person, or a person with a disability is missing.
Her family says it’s unlike Ahlea to just take off, and that she would always stay in touch with them.
Authorities have been following up on potential sightings of Ahlea, including one of her working at a store in New York, though none of the sightings have been verified.
