Disappearance
Diana Avera was arrested for disorderly conduct on May 21, 1982, and was sent to Searcy Hospital in Mount Vernon, Alabama, against her will.
Avera has paranoid schizophrenia. While she was in the hospital, she got electroconvulsive therapy, or ECT, as well as other treatments. When her family went to see her in the hospital, they said she was “like a zombie,” barely able to talk or walk.
Avera got out of the hospital sometime in August 1982. Since then, no one has seen or heard from her.
People thought that the hospital or the police had reported her missing in 1982, but her family just found out that wasn’t true. When they heard this, in August of 2020, she was officially reported as missing.
Her family sent in samples of her DNA, and her case has been put into NamUS.
