Antonia Lopez, 16, sent her boyfriend a series of text messages between 12:56 a.m. and 3:06 a.m. in September 2016. One message read, “It’s a girl, by the way.” Another message read, “Babe, I had a miscarriage.” But she didn’t miscarry, she k*illed her baby.
She sent another text message to him about an hour later saying, “Babe, we can try again if you want.”
At 3:40 a.m. Lopez lagged into her Facebook account asking friends for help.
“Who can do me a huge favor and has a car,” the Facebook post read.
Lopez asked a friend who responded to the FB post if she would help her get rid of her de*ad baby. She asked the friend for trash bags and her vehicle.
Lopez Tossed Baby Out Second-Story Window
A pathologist confirmed the baby girl Lopez delivered and then immediately threw out of the second-story window of her Omaha home was in fact alive and breathing, despite her claiming the baby was stillborn.
After delivering the baby in her home, Lopez told her mother what she had done. Her mother immediately dialed 911 and rushed downstairs to the baby’s side. She performed CPR until paramedics arrived.
The baby was transported to Creighton University Medical Center and pronounced de*ad at the hospital.
Antonia Charged With Mu*rder
Antonia was taken into custody and charged with her baby’s m*urder. She faced up to 20 years in pr*ison if charged as an adult.
Judge Christopher Kelly instead charged Antonia as a juvenile, allowing her to avoid pr*ison time. Judge Kelly sentenced Antonia to live in a group home, complete 50 hours of community service, attend therapy, and delete her Facebook account.
The judge ordered her to delete the Facebook account due to the comments she received after the case went public. Many people threatened the teenager and made other angry comments to her.
My Thoughts: Judgement Wasn’t Fair
I’m a devoted true crime fan who has read and watched stories about child k*illers charged as adults who will spend the rest of their lives behind bars. The Equal Justice Initiative says 73+ children were sentenced to life in pr*ison at age 13 or 14. Mu*rder is serious, there is no coming back after choosing to ki*ll someone. I think m*urder is mur*der and k*illers should serve some time in p*rison. This baby might have only been a few minutes old, but it was still a living, breathing human being.
