A father in Illinois was sentenced for beating his teenage daughter to de*ath following an argument about wanting to go to prom.
The de*adly attack happened in May 2022.
Officers said they discovered the body of a 17-year-old girl, later identified as Mia Maro, on the lower level of the house. They also found her father, 42-year-old Mohammed Almaru with self-inflicted wounds to his wrist and throat.
Almaru had ingested pills and was taken to a hospital, where police said he was able to be stabilized.
Officials determined Maro died as a result of multiple injuries and ruled her de*ath a hom*icide, according to the public safety department.
Authorities said Maro and her father argued about her attending prom.
Prosecutors said the 42-year-old man gave his daughter permission to go but later changed his mind, saying he “did not trust her” after she crashed his car.
In the days leading up to her de*ath, Maro allegedly texted a relative, saying she feared her father might “beat her” or “kil*l her.”
Police said they found a bent metal pole and rubber mallet allegedly used in Maro’s mur*der.
There was also a letter allegedly written by Almaru where he admitted to beating Mia after discovering she had lied to him, prosecutors said.
He allegedly confessed to the crime in a text to a family member.
“I lost my mind, went out of control, and beat her … I f***ed up big time I’m sorry,” he said.
On Monday, he was sentenced to 55 years. His attorneys filed a motion to reduce the sentence, however, the judge denied it.
Almaru will get credit for the more than two years he has already spent in custody, but the judge said he must serve all his terms.
